recording local history

Samuel Speare was born in Rickinghall, Suffolk on 15th January 1853. He was the second child of a poor family and had eight siblings. Samuel became a missionary, spending five years in Zanzibar before returning to England to study for the priesthood. Sadly he died before he could realise his ambition.

This book was first compiled in 1876 from letters written by and about Samuel Speare. The original editor was Revd Thomas Wilkinson then curate of Rickinghall Superior and later Bishop of Zululand. We have updated the book (but not the text) by adding contemporary  etchings and modern photographs to illustrate his life and death. The photograph on the cover was loaned to us by a great niece.
