James Scarfe was born in 1816 at Botesdale. Of humble background, James was born in a Suffolk village and grew up to work with and understand horses. He joined the cavalry at the age of twenty and served as a regular soldier in the highly esteemed 17th Lancers, which was a showpiece regiment.
James Scarfe rode, and was injured, in the "Charge of the Light Brigade" in the Crimean War and was lucky enough to be one of the few survivors. This is his untold story, rediscovered from contemporary records and passed down family artefacts and stories.
