recording local history

Over the years our villages have been home to many shops of one kind or another. Some have had a relatively long life and have changed and developed to keep up with the times while others flourished briefly and then disappeared. This book is not a catalogue of local shops; it is an attempt to use local shops and shopping habits to illustrate the impact of these changes over the centuries.
The aim of this book is to continue the story started by Botesdale Medieval Market, looking at how from the 16th century onwards the retail trade and other businesses evolved in our villages and the factors which brought about those changes. Chief among these were population changes and increasing wealth nationally, regionally and at a local level.
